Tradition of Evening Snacks with Aloo Jeera Fry

The evening snack is an important part of the Indian lifestyle. We aren’t the kind of folks who are satisfied with just tea and biscuits – we usually need something a little more substantial. This makes the evening snack not only more enjoyable but it also facilitates extended conversations and interactions.

Some food historians trace this tradition back to our Colonial past. Even after coming to India, the British adhered to their practice of having a light meal with their evening cup of tea – biscuits with sandwiches, cakes and other assorted munchies. In time, we adopted the practice… but we changed the menu. Completely!

In today’s post we are going to celebrate the evening meal tradition in our own, typically Indian style by making a quick and delicious snack using potatoes, cumin seeds and some everyday spices… this is a popular item called Aloo Jeera Fry.

Here are the ingredients that you will need to gather.

Ingredients for Aloo Jeera Fry

  1. Potatoes: 4, large

  2. Cumin (Jeera) Seeds: 2 tablespoons

  3. Cumin (Jeera) Powder: Just a pinch

  4. P Mark Mustard Oil: 7 tablespoons

  5. Onion: 1, large

  6. Garlic (Lahsun): 4 cloves

  7. Ginger (Adrak): One half-inch piece

  8. Turmeric (Haldi) Powder: One large pinch

  9. Red Chilli Powder: One large pinch

  10. Coriander (Dhania) Leaves: One small bunch

  11. Salt: to taste

The quantities mentioned above are for serving four persons. Adjust the quantities proportionately to suit the number of servings you require.

Preparation for Aloo Jeera Fry

Wash, boil and peel the potatoes. Cut them into small bite-sized pieces.

Finely chop the onion.

Finely chop the garlic.

Finely chop the ginger.

Coarsely chop the coriander leaves.

Method for Aloo Jeera Fry

Heat one tablespoon of Mustard Oil in a frying pan and sauté the cumin seeds till they splutter. Then add another tablespoon of Mustard Oil along with the onion, garlic and ginger and continue to sauté for another minute or so. Remove the frying pan from the flame and keep aside.

Heat the remaining Mustard Oil in another pan on a Medium flame. When the oil reaches its smoking point and starts emitting whiffs of aromatic white smoke, reduce the flame to Low.

Now add the potatoes to the pan and fry till the potato pieces turn golden brown in colour. Next, add the contents of the frying pan to this pan and mix well.

Now add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder and salt. Stir to mix the spices well. Cook for around two minutes or so – and then turn the flame off.

Transfer the contents of the pan to a serving dish and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Your Aloo Jeera Fry is now ready. Serve it hot. It has all the makings of a great evening snack and is an excellent complement to hot cups of tea or coffee. Let the conversations begin!
