Enjoy a Hearty Monsoon Snack: Batata Poha

We have, during the past few weeks, been discussing a wide range of Monsoon snacks on this blog to celebrate the onset of the rainy weather. If you are in the mood for something that’s a little more substantial and filling than Pakoras, here’s a delightful snack from Maharashtra called Batata Poha. You can have it as a teatime snack or even make a meal of it.

This is also a healthy snack because Poha (Flattened Rice) is rich in iron, dietary fibre and vitamins. It is also a good source of carbohydrates and natural antioxidants, and is known to have probiotic properties.

The ingredients that you will require are given below.

Ingredients for Batata Poha

  1. Flattened Rice (Poha): 250 grams

  2. Potatoes: 150 grams

  3. Onions: 100 grams

  4. P Mark Mustard Oil: 4 tablespoons

  5. Mustard Seeds (Rai): Half a teaspoon

  6. Green Chillies: 2

  7. Peanuts: 50 grams

  8. Cumin (Jeera) Seeds: 1 teaspoon

  9. Turmeric (Haldi) Powder: Half a teaspoon

  10. Curry Leaves: 10

  11. Coriander (Dhania) Leaves: 30 grams

  12. Salt: to taste

The quantities mentioned above are for two servings. Adjust the quantities proportionately to suit the number of servings you require.

Preparation for Batata Poha

Wash and peel the potatoes. Boil them and then cut them into small cubes.

Finely chop the onions.

Finely chop the green chillies.

Coarsely chop the coriander leaves.

Method for Batata Poha

Soak the Poha and then use a strainer to drain the water. Keep aside.

Dry-roast the peanuts for around two minutes and keep aside.

Heat the Mustard Oil in a pan on a Medium flame. Add the mustard seeds and sauté till the seeds begin to splutter. Then add the cumin seeds and curry leaves and continue to sauté for half a minute.

Now add the onions and continue to sauté for around two minutes.

Next, add the roasted peanuts and continue to sauté for around three minutes.

Now add the potatoes and green chillies. Sauté for around two minutes.

Next, add the turmeric powder and salt. Stir well to mix the contents thoroughly. Continue to cook for another minute or so.

Finally, add the soaked Poha and cook for around two minutes. Stir to mix well. Transfer the contents of the pan to a serving dish and garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot – along with steaming cups of tea or coffee.
