Protect Your Skin from the Summer Sun with Mustard Oil

As the heat of summer sets in across India, your skin faces two serious threats from your immediate environment: damage from the harsh ultraviolet rays of the Sun and damage from the high levels of air pollution that is prevalent especially in large cities, towns and industrial areas. Both these threats results in dehydration and degeneration of the epidermal skin cells, especially on your face and other exposed parts of your body.

There is a solution to this problem that can be found in ancient Ayurveda – cold-pressed Mustard Oil. The natural attributes of this oil make it a highly effective sunscreen lotion that is 100 per cent chemical-free. There is a very good reason why we are emphasizing the “Chemical-free” property. That’s because commercial sunscreen lotions are known to contain certain toxic chemicals like Titanium dioxide, Oxybenzone and OMC that are proven to be carcinogenic – instead of offering protection they paradoxically increase the risks of skin cancer.

Mustard Oil is packed with natural Vitamin E, vital Omega-3 Fatty Acids and natural antioxidants. Vitamin E provides natural protection from the ultraviolet rays of the sun while the natural antioxidants protect the skin from the free radicals in the polluted air that surrounds you when you go out. Moreover, Omega-3 is a vital nutrient that naturally hydrates your skin and protects it from infections and irritants. Omega-3 is particularly valuable because it is a substance that your body cannot produce on its own – it has to be acquired from dietary sources.

Before you step out of your home and into the harsh summer sun, apply a thin layer of cold-pressed Mustard Oil on your face, especially the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. Also, apply it on the other parts of your body that are exposed to the sun, like your hands and forearms for example. You don’t require a thick application; just a thin layer applied with your fingertips is enough. And if you don’t like the smell of Mustard Oil, you can mask it by adding any aromatic natural essential oil of your choice to the Mustard Oil before applying it.

So if you’ve got cold-pressed Mustard Oil in your kitchen you are all set to brave the rigours of the Indian summer sun. Be protected, go out and enjoy yourself!
