Typically, the period from late April to end July is a time when allergies tend to flare up, especially in children. In particularly severe cases, mothers have no option other than administering anti-allergic medicines – but many of these medicines have side-effects like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and tummy upsets.

An article published in the Asian Journal of Dairy and Food Research indicates that a regular intake of cold-pressed Mustard Oil (via one’s daily diet) can help in preventing asthma, allergies and asthmatic eczema. The article reveals that the major cause of these health issues lies in the high absorption of Trans Fatty Acids (TFA) through fast foods, processed snack foods and other fatty foods.

Cold-pressed Mustard Oil protects children from allergies and the other health issues mentioned above because it has zero trans fats. But there is more: since ancient times, Mustard Oil is known to soothe colds, coughs, congestion, respiratory problems and allergies. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties that help in easing discomfiture and reducing irritation.

Mustard Oil is also rich in Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA) and Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) and these are proven to keep kids healthy and prevent health problems caused by season change and allergies.

However, here’s a word of caution. While adding cold-pressed Mustard Oil to the food you are cooking for the family is, in general, a great idea, some children (a very small percentile) may have allergic or anaphylactic reactions to mustard. You should check with your paediatrician or family doctor.

Stray reactions apart, you should not miss out on the opportunity to protect your kids using Mustard Oil when the season for allergies sets in.
