How to Ease a Sore Throat

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

The seasonal changes taking place along with the widespread prevalence of coughs, colds and influenza can leave you with a sore throat at this time of year. The situation is worsened by the poor quality of the air you breathe, especially in the cities. There isn’t much you can do to avoid getting a sore throat but when you do, here is a simple home remedy to give you some relief.

The efficacy of this home remedy comes from the use of mustard seeds and Mustard Oil, both of which have strong anti-inflammatory properties along with antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial properties that help fight throat infections.

The ingredients that you need for this simple formulation are: a tablespoon of cold-pressed Mustard Oil; a tablespoon of mustard seeds (Rai); the juice extracted from half a lemon; one tablespoon of honey; and a tablespoon of rock salt (Sendha Namak). If you don’t have rock salt, you can use ordinary table salt but reduce the quantity to half a tablespoon. Before you start preparing this concoction, you need to coarsely grind the mustard seeds.

Heat around 300 millilitres of water in a pan and bring it to a boil. To the boiling water, add the Mustard Oil, ground mustard seeds, lemon juice, honey and rock salt. Stir to mix well. After a minute or so turn the flame off. Cover the pan with a lid and let the contents stand for around 15 minutes. Use this mixture to gargle at least twice a day – or whenever the soreness in your throat becomes particularly bothersome.

This easy home remedy eases your sore throat with a two-pronged approach. The anti-inflammatory properties of mustard and Mustard Oil soothe the irritation in the throat and reduce the pain and soreness. The antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal properties of the oil help in fighting the infection that caused the soreness in the throat.

So always keep a small jar of this home remedy close at hand during this season. You never know when you may need it.
