Recreating the Street Food Magic: Indian-Style Bread Omelette

As you walk through the bustling marketplaces in many parts of India, you can hear a distinctive cry ringing forth from the throng of street food vendors: Baraid Amlate! What they are offering is a “Bread Omelette” that’s like no other omelette you’ve ever tasted before. Today, we are going to recreate this mouth-watering street food item in the safe and hygienic confines of your kitchen.

The ingredients that you will need are simple and few – this is a dish that you can easily whip up in fifteen minutes or less.

Ingredients for Bread Omelette

  1. Eggs: 4

  2. Bread: 4 slices

  3. P Mark Mustard Oil: 4 tablespoons

  4. Green Chillies: 2

  5. Red Chilli Powder: 1 teaspoon

  6. Black Pepper Powder: One large pinch

  7. Salt: to taste

The ingredients mentioned above are for serving two persons with a double-egg bread omelette each. Adjust the ingredients proportionately to suit the number of servings you require.

Preparation for Bread Omelette

Finely chop the green chillies.

Method for Bread Omelette

In a mixing bowl, break and beat the eggs. Add the green chillies, red chilli powder, black pepper powder and salt. Mix well.

Heat the Mustard Oil in a pan on a High flame; once the oil reaches its smoking point and emits whiffs of white smoke, lower the flame to Medium.

Add the omelette mixture to the pan; as it starts to cook, add a slice of bread to the mixture. After half a minute or so, flip the slice over – and repeat this action till the slice is well-coated in the omelette mixture. Do the same with the three other slices of bread.

When your omelette is well-cooked (it will turn light brown on both sides), turn the flame off.

Your Indian-style Bread Omelette is now ready. Arrange the four bread omelette slices on two plates (two slices to a plate) and serve with ketchup.

You can do a lot of experimentation with this recipe – that’s what the street food vendors do too. Some add chopped onions; some add four or five cloves of garlic, coarsely chopped; some add chaat masala to the spices; and some even add sautéed and spluttered mustard seeds. So just do your own thing! Remember that old saying: variety is the spice of life!
