Managing the Doshas

The ancient Indian science of holistic healing known as Ayurveda believed that the human body contained distinct biological forces known as “Dosha”. There are three Doshas: Vata, Kapha and Pitta, and these are believed to combine in various ways that affect a person’s physical, mental and emotional health. In fact, practitioners of Ayurveda say that every person has a unique ratio of these three Doshas. The formulations prepared by these practitioners seek to balance these Doshas to prevent or treat various ailments.

Dr Anu Sreedhar K. C., an Ayurveda specialist, explains why cold-pressed Mustard Oil has been used in Ayurveda as an active ingredient for thousands of years. The diverse nutrients found in Mustard Oil makes it an ideal substance for balancing Vata, Kapha and Pitta. Across a range of herbal formulations, Mustard Oil is used to reduce Vata and Kapha, and to increase Pitta.

By calming the force of Vata, Mustard Oil prevents and treats chronic fatigue syndrome; dry skin including a dry scalp which is one of the causes of dandruff; hair loss; asthma; flatulence; and irritable gut syndrome. In this way, Mustard Oil offers a completely natural way to reduce Vata and avoid skin, intestinal and respiratory problems. Such reduction also increases one’s energy levels.

By pacifying Kapha, Mustard Oil prevents and treats joint and muscle pains; indigestion; constipation; and sinus problems. Reducing Kapha also controls one’s tendency to gain weight and, thus, helps avoid obesity. Such reduction also boosts immunity and keeps frequent coughs and colds away.

To enhance the force of Pitta, Mustard Oil uses its natural heating properties. This improves metabolism; tones the digestive system and speeds up the digestion process; and improves blood circulation, strengthens blood vessels and raises the overall quality of blood. It also has a favourable effect on the skin, creating a rich skin tone and keeping the skin supple and well hydrated.

Ayurveda is known to have been around for more than 3,000 years but the centrality of cold-pressed Mustard Oil in various herbal formulations and dietary aids is valid even today – offering a natural and holistic avenue for maintaining good health by balancing the three Doshas with every meal you prepare.
