Mustard Oil To The Rescue!

It’s that time of year once again… a time when much of North India, the cities in particular, struggles with plummeting air quality levels. Schools are forced to shut down; the elderly are beset by a string of respiratory ailments; and everyday people are left with no option other than venturing forth wearing respiratory masks and gasping for air.

Believe it or not, one of the most powerful weapons for fighting this menace can be found in your home… in your kitchen! Yes, Mustard Oil is a natural antidote to tackle the effect of the toxic air that surrounds you.

Nutritionists like Dr Rupali Datta and Taranjit Kaur strongly recommend the use of Mustard Oil for preventing respiratory problems, mainly because this oil is one of the largest vegetable sources of vital Omega-3 Fatty Acids. This imbues Mustard Oil with strong anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen both the body’s respiratory system as well as the immune system.

Mustard Oil also has powerful heating properties that clear the respiratory tract and prevent congestion.

Try this simple home remedy that will help you battle the unhealthy air that surrounds you. In a large pan (it should be a wide-mouthed vessel like a Degchi) heat water till it comes to a boil. Add two tablespoons of Mustard Oil along with a teaspoon of cumin (Jeera) seeds. Continue boiling for a minute or so and then turn the flame off.

Place a towel over your head and hold your face just above the pan (be careful – remember, it’s hot). Inhale the mustard oil-infused steam rising up from the pan. Continue inhaling till the water cools down and steam stops emerging.

Do this twice a day: once before you leave home and then again, after you return. You will notice the difference within a week of starting this treatment.
