Sometimes when you experience an allergic reaction to foods or other substances, an itchy red rash shows up on your skin. Such rashes are commonly known as Urticaria. One normally seeks relief by taking anti-allergy medicines or antihistamine drugs – but these have side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, headaches and nausea. They are also known to cause extreme fatigue.

Ayurvedic Insights from Dr. Dixa Bhavsar

Dr Dixa Bhavsar is an Ayurveda expert with a Bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. She believes that Ayurveda isn’t just a mode of treatment; it is a way of life. She sees it as a holistic approach to health and wellness.

Based on her in-depth knowledge and experience, Dr Bhavsar feels that Urticaria can be treated using a natural substance that has no side effects whatsoever – an all too familiar substance called cold-pressed Mustard Oil. She points out that a condition very similar to Urticaria is described in ancient Ayurveda treatises. These treatises refer to the condition as Shitapitta.

The Healing Power of Mustard Oil

Dr Bhavsar says that by simply applying cold-pressed Mustard Oil on the rashes one can get quick relief. This oil has natural soothing properties that ease the itching sensation and reduce the discomfiture caused by the rashes. Mustard Oil also has powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties that make it very useful in the treatment of various kinds of skin infections. The oil also has natural moisturising and rehydrating properties that help in preventing dry skin, thereby reducing the itchiness which is, in fact, the most irritating thing about rashes!

If you have recurring bouts of Urticaria, Dr Bhavsar recommends this simple home remedy. Take equal quantities of Haldi (Turmeric), Amla (Indian gooseberry) and Neem (Indian lilac), and use a mortar and pestle to grind them into a paste. Next, heat some Mustard Oil in a pan till the oil becomes warm – you don’t need very hot oil for this preparation. To the warm oil add the Haldi-Amla-Neem paste that you prepared and mix the ingredients to create a balm-like texture. Gently apply this on the rashes. You will feel the soothing effect almost immediately.

So once again, it is Mustard Oil that comes to the rescue – tested and trusted for thousands of years!
